Mapping with JavaScript (Leaflet, OpenLayers 2, Google Maps)

Mapping with JavaScript

The goal of this talk is to show you how to include maps on your website and explain a little of how they work under the hood. Specifically we will:

  • explain the common principles
  • compare and contrast the popular mapping libraries Leaflet, OpenLayers 2 and Google Maps, with examples, so you can choose the right one for you
  • explain some of the techniques they use to provide a smooth interactive experience in the browser
  • show a little of what happens on the server side
  • have a look at the future of mapping with JavaScript with projects like OpenLayers 3 and Cesium
